Water Harvesting Fish Pond

This fish pond captures water from two downspouts from the new addition. The rain water tops off the lower pond during each rain event. The homeowners do not need to fill the pond with water from a garden hose. During heavy rains, overflow is directed into an adjacent rain garden. The pond is planted with native bog plants: Saururus (lizard’s tail), Pontederia (pickerel rush), and Dulichium (dwarf water bamboo), and the non-native, floating, water hyacinth and water lettuce. The pond is stocked with goldfish and rosy-red minnows.
